I generally accept insurance on an out-of-network basis. If you plan on using your health insurance, please keep in mind you will be responsible for my full fee at the time of service, and then you can work with your insurance company to seek reimburse at the company’s established percentage of the fee.
I understand that therapy can be expensive, and you understandably wouldn’t want to pay out of pocket if you have insurance. However, you should be aware of the potential implications of using medical insurance for mental health counseling, such as;
- Medical insurance providers usually require you to receive a diagnosis for a mental “disorder” in order for your fee to be covered. Your diagnosis will be in their computer database and potentially available to others anytime you provide a release of your records.
- You can lose some of your privacy, depending upon the amount of clinical documentation required by your insurance company. I suggest you check with your provider to determine specifically how much detail and personal information they require the clinician to provide after each counseling session.
- You may not get the therapist you need. Research consistently shows that the best predictor of success in therapy is the fit between the client and the therapist. Your insurance company will probably limit you to only those therapists on their approved provider list. Thus limiting your ability to ensure you have the best therapist for your needs and personality.
For the reasons cited above, I suggest you consider paying out of pocket and avoid the potential problems. Most often I meet with a client every two weeks. At $120 per session, this equates to $240 per month. Of course each individual is different and the amount of time they spend in therapy will vary. But, for planning purposes I suggest you think about a cost of $1440 spread over a six-month period. Granted this is a lot of money, but we are talking about making significant changes in your life for now and far into the future. Paying out of pocket will give you more control over your therapy, and peace of mind regarding your privacy.
I accept cash, check, and most major credit cards as forms of payment.
If you are unable to attend a session, please make sure you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. Otherwise, you may be charged for the full rate of the session.
